Our History
The Hong Kong Specific Learning Difficulties Research Group (the Research Group) was established in August 1998. At that time, there was a lack of systematic research on Chinese dyslexia in Hong Kong. With the help of the Education Bureau (formerly the Education Department), Professor Ho Shuk-han, who was then teaching at the Department of Psychology of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Professor Chen Wei'e of the Department of Educational Psychology of the Chinese University of Hong Kong were invited to form a research team. The Education Bureau also appointed two educational psychologists as representatives to jointly develop identification and assessment tools suitable for Hong Kong students, and conduct relevant academic research to understand the characteristics of Chinese dyslexia and counseling methods.
Since 2004, Professor Chung Kit-wah, then from the Department of Educational Psychology, Counselling and Learning Support at the Education University of Hong Kong (formerly the Hong Kong Institute of Education), has joined the research team. In 2020-2024, Professor Pei-shi Yang from the Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong and Professor Tian-you Wang from the Department of Psychology of the University of Hong Kong joined the research team respectively. The Education Bureau has also been appointing educational psychologists as team members as needed to participate in relevant working meetings and provide advice, assist in disseminating research results, and promote evidence-based assessment and support measures.
This website aims to introduce the work of the Hong Kong Specific Learning Difficulties Research Group and various resources related to Chinese dyslexia, including identification and assessment tools, counseling materials, a register of assessment tool users, and related academic research, etc., in order to promote the understanding of dyslexia among educators, parents and the public.
